White Stag and BSA's Junior Leader Training
Program Organization
The two programs are organized for different purposes.
National Youth Leadership Training
NYLT is a one-week, single-year program for boys, typically 12-14 years
old, who are or soon will be patrol leaders in their troops. The summer
camp functions as a prototypical troop. The program is led by council
volunteers who recruit youth staff each summer. It is possible a boy
will repeat on youth staff for a year or two. All boys are from each
council's troops.
White Stag Leadership Development
White Stag is a one-week, multi-year program for boys and girls ages
10½-18 who are members and leaders in their respective youth programs.
The summer camp functions as a prototypical Scout troop. Most participants
are from local troops, though some travel much farther to participate.
The program is “tiered” and allows youth to participate at
a level suitable to their age, leadership competency, expertise, and
comfort level. There are three participant phases: one for members of
groups, another for leaders of small groups, and a third for leaders
of leaders, or large group leaders.
Each participant phase is led by patrols of slightly older youth with
previous White Stag experience. Each youth patrol is in turn supervised
by a patrol of adult staff. This tiered structure enables participants
to cycle through up to nine levels of leadership development over several
years. Repeated exposure to and opportunity to practice the competencies
of leadership is assured.
